Why Horse Shows Matter

Horse shows are more than just competition. They teach discipline, responsibility, and partnership with the horse. Riders gain real-world experience that accelerates their growth both in and out of the saddle.

What is a "schooling" horse show?

Lower-level horse shows are designed for beginner to early intermediate riders. These shows focus on learning, confidence, and positive experience rather than high-level competition. Riders are introduced to the show environment in a supportive and encouraging way.

Who is ready to start showing?

Riders may be ready to show when they:

Can safely control their horse at a walk and trot (and sometimes canter)

Understand basic arena patterns and directions

Show responsibility in grooming and tacking up (with help if needed)

Demonstrate good listening skills and sportsmanship

Your instructor will always help guide when the timing is right.

Do riders need to own a horse to compete?

No. Many riders show on lesson horses provided by the academy. These horses are experienced and selected to help riders feel safe and successful in the show ring.

What types of classes will riders participate in?

Beginner shows often include:

Walk or Walk/Trot classes

Walk/Trot/Canter classes (as riders progress)

Equitation (rider position and control)

Ground pole or cross-rail classes

Horsemanship or flat classes

What should my child expect on show day?

Show days are exciting and structured. Riders can expect:

Grooming and preparing their horse

Help from instructors and team members

Time to walk the arena and understand their class A chance to ride in a supportive, encouraging environment

Ribbons and recognition for their efforts

Is showing competitive or stressful?

At the beginner level, showing is meant to be fun and educational. We focus on:

Personal progress over placing

Building confidence

Learning how to handle nerves

Celebrating every rider’s effort

What do riders wear to a show?

(English Attire)

Riders should wear proper English show attire, including:

Beige or khaki breeches

Approved riding helmet (show helmet)

Paddock boots with garter straps (younger riders) or tall boots (older riders)

Belt

Show shirt (with collar)

Show jacket

Black gloves

Hair neatly secured: braid or in a hair net, depending on age

We’re happy to help guide you on exactly what your rider needs.

How much does it cost to participate?

Costs can vary depending on the show, but may include:

Entry fees

Coaching/support fees

Horse use fee (if using a lesson horse)

We always aim to keep beginner shows affordable and accessible for families.

How often should a rider compete?

This depends on the rider’s goals and readiness. Some riders show occasionally for fun, while others participate more regularly. We help families find the right balance.

What are the benefits of horse showing?

Horse showing helps riders:

Build confidence and independence

Set and achieve goals

Learn responsibility and sportsmanship

Improve riding skills more quickly

Become part of a supportive community

Will my child be pressured to compete?
